What’s the difference between stamped parts and extruded parts?

The basic principle of stamping is to use a specially designed die to press steel sheets into the desired shapes using a press machine—ranging from several dozen tons to 2,000 tons—according to a pre-designed process. Simply put, stamped parts are metal sheets that have been shaped into specific forms by means of a die. Stamped parts can range in size from large components to small ones. For example, the four doors and two hoods, side panels, front and rear fenders, front and rear wheel arches, as well as the front and rear floor panels—all these are large stamped parts. Working on such large components all day long is incredibly exhausting and physically demanding; these parts essentially form the outer body shell that covers the exterior of the car. Other components, such as inner panels, reinforcing beams, and center crossmembers, serve primarily to provide structural reinforcement. Then there are smaller stamped parts—most of which are quite tiny. The roll-forming process, on the other hand, relies on the plastic deformation of materials, using rollers to gradually shape complex components like shafts, valve cores, and specialized fasteners. Roll forming involves line contact and is carried out continuously and stepwise, requiring relatively low forming forces. With each pass of the roller, one or several workpieces can be produced. Compared with cutting and grinding processes, roll forming not only boasts high production efficiency and material savings but also yields products with higher strength and greater dimensional stability. This process is particularly well-suited for manufacturing long, slender parts that are difficult to cut. Especially when producing large volumes—on the order of millions of units per year—roll forming proves to be the most advantageous method, offering significant economic benefits.
